$6,000 Cash - VERY FIRM
(Sorry no trades. I'll only take $6,000 in cash currency, please don't offer me less.)
1987 4Runner 4x4 22RE SR5 (4 cylinder, fuel injected) Five Speed
Manual Transmission.
I've owned it for 14 years. It's a first generation 4Runner and a collectible. It still has plenty of power.
Please have the cash as I don't need to sell it.
This vehicle would be best owned by a mechanically inclined person,
someone who knows how to work on cars. The good news is that it's
easier to work on than most cars and easier to slide under.
It's not been driven hard and I rarely used it for 4 wheel driving.
I drive it around town fine if there's not a lot of stop and go
traffic, but the transmission is going out. You can really hear it
driving on the highway, but if not highway driving it's been driving fine for me.
It just passed emissions and I have the two year old spark plugs I
just took out just before the test so you can maybe see what's going on
in each cylinder.
For more positives please see further down, for the negatives please see page two.
It has a semi-persistent valve
cover gasket oil leak as the rear half moon is not as high
as the engine block. When I raise the half-moon with silicone the leak
stops for a while but that set up degrades. The leak makes it look like there's a rear main leak which hopefully there isn't.
It was my regular around-town driver on the other side of the state (in a smaller metropolitan area than here) and
still has good power. I've never seen it smoke. In late 2018 I drove it
to Washington State and back, and it's been on two other trips, one to
Central California and one to Southern California.
Registration
in California is paid through July, 2026.
While owning it since March 2012 I've spent $10,500+ just in mechanical
repairs and upgrades, tests. It has a clean, current title and registration
(in my name.) I have virtually all the receipts/documentation since
I've had it.
To be honest, this vehicle is not a good vehicle to regularly be in
stop-and-go traffic jams because as it has a 5-speed, manual, truck style
transmission and the traffic here can be horrible.
You will stand out (in a positive way) to a number of people with this
vehicle, particularly males.
Sorry but due to insurance reasons only I can drive the car during
our test drive.
Serious inquires only please.
Pros:
I have receipts for everything of significance.
1) New
spark plugs, spark plug wires not old, new rotor, distributor cap, newer fuel pump and primary
metal fuel filter. (Secondary fuel filter was checked in 2022.) This 1987
4Runner 4x4 22RE SR5 runs fine, usually starts easily if the
battery is well charged mostly due to it's fuel injection. It corners well (for it's type of vehicle.) I
always use 89 octane gasoline per a Toyota mechanic's instructions.
2) This first generation 4Runner has good
compression for 306,000 miles. Compression test was done by a
professional mechanic shop in 2022, documented results were: 140,
150, 140, 130. When I purchased the 4Runner, the seller claimed
the engine was rebuilt at what would now be 40,000-50,000 miles ago but
he had no receipt, so sorry, no guarantee of a rebuild, (frankly I don't
think it was rebuilt, maybe some other major engine work was done?)
It's never smoked (out of the exhaust pipe.) It's never been smoked in
either.
3) Folks, particularly males, often check out
this vehicle. Here in Santa Cruz I think some folks don't know
what it is. People usually think this car looks good, unless you're
looking directly at the hood, (the clear coat on
the hood is peeling.) There is a significant
indentation on part of the upper front roof, though it's tough to see
for most folks due to the vehicle's height (it has a 4 inch 'body'
lift. ) The body though isn't an issue as people generally think the
vehicle looks impressive.
4) New clutch, flywheel and bearing in 2017,
professionally installed. The clutch still has plenty of life in it.
5) Used 5 speed transmission put in at the same
time as the clutch in 2017. The transmission is the biggest negative issue to it.
6a) Both front brakes assemblies (rotors and
pads) were professional replaced on the 4Runner in 2022. Expensive
stainless steel rotors were installed (maybe stainless steel pads too?)
Front bearings were also checked and re-packed then. I spent $800 at
Tiger Toyota several months ago for brake work and was told more brake
issues could be forthcoming though didn't seem to know the details.
6b) Rear Brake shoes and rear brake cylinders
replaced professionally about 10,000 miles ago.
7) All CV joints, front axles and boots were
professional replaced in 2022.
8) 4wheel drive works fine.
9) All doors lock (including the
tailgate) and all windows go up and down. The two front window vents go
side-to-side easily and are great to have.
10) Four new professionally installed KYB Gas
Shocks were installed in June of 2022, less than 3000 miles ago and not
used off-road yet.
11) U-joints were replaced professionally in 2018.
12) Right rear wheel bearing assembly replaced
professionally in late 2018.
13) The 4Runner has a 4 inch body lift.
14) It has kind of an anti-theft ignition system.
15) This 4runner has a built-in diagnostic system,
though it isn't as specific as newer cars.
16) New valve cover gasket installed using aluminum
half moons. (These 22RE engines need the aluminum half moons put in
with the valve cover gasket change, not the usual rubber half moons.
The flat top of the half moons need to be at the same level of the
surrounding top of the head where the gaskets touches. (This may need
to be worked on again but no oil leaking onto the ground at the
moment.).
17) Great quality blue tooth stereo radio/CD player
& speakers installed, which sounds very good.
18) Newer 2nd battery is hooked. It can be hooked to a small
pure sine wave inverter, 700 watts peak. (The Amazon advertisement for
it claims it is pure sine wave but I question if it is as my phone gets
rather warm while it's charging it.)
Also by turning a switch by
the front driver's seat, and slipping an easy to reach
fuse, this second battery can connect to the main battery and both
batteries can be charged by the alternator, or by the hooked up solar
panel and charge controller connection I installed. See picture seven. THIS SECOND BATTERY HOOK-UP GIVES THE VEHICLE MORE POWER.
19) Has trailer hitch; I haven't checked it in
years but the brake light attachment to the hitch used to work. I've
never used it though.
20) Extra parts, new and used which are worth
hundreds, including a new, unused $200 NAPA power steering pump, though
the current power steering still works fine.
21) Interior looks quite good for its age.
22) Everything essential electrically works
though several circuits have been re-wired. Also several new circuits
have been added (that aren't stock.) The car went through a period were
several circuits needed re-wiring. I expect that to be an issue over the years.
23) When properly hooked up the air conditioner
works very good but not at
idle. The system doesn't leak and new AC belt put on in 2022. It's
charged with the freon substitute, which is easy to get. I have the
recharging mechanism for it. I checked the system in June, 2022 for the
first time in two years and it didn't need more freon substitute, the
pressure was still around 80 PSI. THE LINKAGE TO TURN ON THE AC IS
BROKEN BEHIND THE CONSOLE SO I HAVEN'T HAD AC IN A FEW YEARS. I EXPECT
IT CAN BE JERRY-RIGGED, OR FIXED. I literally couldn't reach the
connection behind the console.
24) Electric rear window moves up and down nicely
though it's been re-wired to do that. The key in the rear of the
tailgate no longer raises and lowers the tailgate window.
25) Almost new tires are great in the rain and make the drive so much quieter.
26) Good headlights.
27) Removable roof rack which you use at your own
risk. In 2018 I drove the 4runner with the roof rack from Washington
State to Sonora. It makes for a lot of drag but it worked.
28) New EGR plate and gasket professionally installed.
The EGR was cleaned out as part of making it pass emissions.
29) Valve adjustment 6
years ago. You can do a valve adjustment on this vehicle yourself,
measurements and instructions are included in the sale. I think it
could use another value adjustment right now though it has plenty of
power still.
30) Wheel Lock nuts and I have
the key.
31) Front Grill Guard.
32) The rear differential works
fine (as far as I know,) I replaced pinion seal oil (in 2022)
and nut, (but that's already leaking some differential fluid
if it's driven enough, though that doesn't affect the driving.
33) It has a spare tire that's in good shape but
I don't think it's the same size as the other tires. I've never used
it, or even dropped it down from it's storage area under the rear of
the car. Frankly I'm not sure how to do that. THE 4RUNNER WILL NEED ANOTHER SPARE TIRE.
34) Internal radio antenna that has so-so radio
reception, the car is set up for an external antenna, if you want to
drill the hole in the side fender and attach it to the car.
35) Emergency brake works well.
36) Extra unused installed switches for your
future use.
37) Has the original book the car came with.
38) Sale includes a Haynes repair book.
39) It has a extra big aftermarket interior lights.
40) 4Runner's Camper Shell is fine as far as I
know. It's never have taken it off. The window on the
rear driver side of the vehicle was replaced.
41) Windshield wiping and cleaning system works fine.
42) K&N Lifetime Air Filter.
43) Main battery bought new in
2021. The second same size secondary battery was bought new I think in 2024.
44) Adjustable Steering Wheel
45) New top engine breather hose as well as PCV hose.
No warranty
on the vehicle, this 4Runner is sold as-is. Thank you.
Like most used cars it has some
what might be considered negatives, see them here.

The car and its owner (me) have a good
reputation thus it's never been involved in a crime or had people mad
at it.
